August 2026 Threat Brief

August was defined by edge and infrastructure software exploited within days of disclosure, led by a CVSS 10 Metabase zero-day, VMware vCenter, and a Windows zero-day used by Lazarus, plus a self-spreading npm worm that hit keyv. Ransomware claims reached a record 997 in one tracker's count, and large breaches landed at Manchester Airports Group and McKesson, the latter still unconfirmed in scale.

VMware vCenter directory traversal used for root access and ESXi ransomware

Critical · exploited

A suspected China-nexus actor exploited a vCenter directory-traversal flaw to get root code execution on the vCenter Server Appliance, then created SSO administrator accounts, pulled directory credentials, and ran Babuk-derived ransomware on ESXi hosts. The German incident-response firm QUIRSO, which reported it, suspects the ransomware was partly a smokescreen to destroy ESXi log telemetry, and could not rule out other motives. Broadcom shipped the fix on 29 Jul. The Hacker News reported the campaign on 17 Aug and says exploitation began five calendar days after public disclosure, without giving the disclosure date. QUIRSO counted about 361 victim IPs in 47 countries, most in Germany, the US, Turkey, Iran, and France.

CVE-2026-59309 (auth bypass), exploited from about 1 Aug

Action: Patch vCenter to the 29 Jul release or later and take management interfaces off any routable network. Look for new cron jobs named like VMware services, unexpected SSO administrator accounts (reported names include adminuser and vcadmin), JSP web shells, and local accounts on ESXi hosts. Keep ESXi logs off-host.

keyv and cacheable npm packages hijacked, worm spreads to 400+ packages

Critical · supply chain

On 4 Aug a compromised GitHub maintainer account was used to push a trojanized keyv release and malicious versions of related packages. Wiz describes the malware as a descendant of the Mini Shai-Hulud family, based largely on TeamPCP's public code. It steals cloud, CI/CD, and developer secrets, AI-agent credentials (Claude, OpenAI, Codex, Cursor, Gemini), crypto wallets and /etc/shadow, then uses stolen npm tokens to publish further infected packages. Wiz reports it spread to more than 400 distinct npm packages. It persists through Claude Code hooks and VS Code tasks.json files, and its command domains are fetched from an Ethereum smart contract so the operator can change infrastructure without changing the malware.

Action: Search lockfiles and CI caches for the versions in Wiz's list, not just keyv. Treat any host or runner that installed them as compromised and rebuild it. Rotate cloud, GitHub, npm, SSH, and Kubernetes secrets. Check repos for new .claude hooks and .vscode/tasks.json entries you did not add.

Windows AFD.sys zero-day used by Lazarus in Operation Dream Job

High · exploited

Microsoft's 11 Aug Patch Tuesday fixed one actively exploited flaw, a use-after-free in the Ancillary Function Driver for WinSock that takes a local, low-privileged user to SYSTEM through a race condition. Check Point reported that North Korean attackers used it in a new wave of Operation Dream Job to deploy a kernel-mode rootkit and the ForestTiger and Troy backdoors, against targets in France, Germany, Brazil, and India. Two other flaws, CVE-2026-62832 and CVE-2026-72971, were publicly disclosed before the patch but not reported exploited. Outlets differ on the size of the release: counts run from about 398 to 421 CVEs depending on what each excludes.

Action: Deploy the August cumulative updates, starting with workstations used by engineering, defense-related, and recruiting-facing staff. Hunt for unexpected kernel drivers and for security tooling that stopped reporting.

Law enforcement and research

What to do

  1. Apply the 11 Aug Windows updates and prioritize CVE-2026-68820 on Windows 11 endpoints.
  2. Patch vCenter to the 29 Jul fix or later, remove management interfaces from routable networks, and check for rogue SSO administrators and cron jobs.
  3. Upgrade Metabase, GitLab, NetScaler, and PaperCut to fixed builds, and check each for web shells or modified projects before assuming a patch is enough.
  4. Update Macs to macOS 26.6.1, 15.7.9 or 14.8.9 and close port 5900 to the internet.
  5. Scan lockfiles, CI caches, and developer machines for the affected keyv, cache-manager, and cacheable packages, rotate cloud, GitHub, and npm secrets on any host that installed them, and review repos for unexpected .claude hooks and .vscode/tasks.json changes.
  6. Inventory browser extensions on managed devices and block installs outside an allow-list, since several extensions turned malicious after a sale or update.
  7. Rotate Stripe secret keys held by any third-party vendor and scan public repositories for exposed live keys.
  8. Require a callback to a known number before any help-desk password or MFA reset, since vishing against Okta and Entra accounts was behind several financial-sector intrusions.
